D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser joined the Racing Presidents podcast this week for a wide-ranging interview that covered everything from Bryce Harper's upcoming return to Washington to the future of legalized sports betting.

When it comes to Harper, whose Phillies play at the Nationals this week, Bowser is conflicted. Though she understands the rivalry, she appreciates what Harper did not only for her favorite team but for political causes she champions.

"Bryce was out in the community. We dedicated a new field that he helped support. He was a big supporter of statehood for Washington, D.C.," Bowser recalled.

"A lot of times we don't see athletes engage that way. He single-handedly made popular a t-shirt celebrating the 51st state. Last year during the [home run derby], he donned the D.C. flag bandana that I think instantly sold out."

Harper makes his return to Nationals Park on Tuesday. He will square off with former teammate Max Scherzer, who is slated to start for the Nats, and could hear some boos when his name is introduced.

Bowser expects Harper to get a reception that reflects the team he now plays for.

"It's all in fun. He's a big boy, so I am pretty sure he knows what to expect," she said.

As for sports betting, Bowser was asked on the Racing Presidents podcast about how it will be implemented in Washington, D.C. once the bill she signed in January becomes law. Plans have been laid to open sportsbooks at Nationals Park as well as Capital One Arena where the Wizards and Capitals play.

"We will have two types; in-person and there will be sportsbooks," Bowser explained. "I'm not sure the limit on how many could be created. We expect them to be associated with other entertainment areas. We will see how that goes. In addition, we will introduce a mobile application where people can make wagers that will be a part of our D.C. Lottery system."
