How did WFT beat Pittsburgh? Sweat, Young say Ravens helped

As the Washington Football Team trotted into the Heinz Field tunnel following their upset 23-17 victory over the previously undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington's two top pass rushers had a parting message.

Montez Sweat, who was responsible for tipping the Ben Roethlisberger's pass that landed in the hands of Jon Bostic for the game-sealing interception, screamed "I knew it!" three times.

Then came a particularly interesting comment from Chase Young, who said "Baltimore exposed some things" about Pittsburgh.

Both comments were noticed first by the NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala.

After the game, Young expanded on what he meant.

"Really a lot. Schemes, certain guy's tendencies," Young said. "I would say tendencies of the offense and certain things they like to do out of different looks Baltimore executed on. I feel like we did too."

Young is referring to Baltimore's clash with Pittsburgh just five days before Monday's game. The Ravens didn't win, but a depleted Baltimore team played inspired football and fell 19-14 -- an impressive effort despite missing close to 20 players due to coronavirus.

After watching the game, Young, Sweat and the rest of Washington's defense felt they could contain Pittsburgh's offense.

And despite a few mishaps in the first half, Washington's defense played spectacularly over the final 30 minutes of the game.

Washington allowed two touchdowns in the first half, but from that point on gave up just one field goal the rest of the afternoon. After allowing 211 yards to the Steelers in the first half, Washington gave up just 107 total yards over the final two quarters.

Excluding the opener in Philadelphia, Washington's defense has been playing its best football of the season over the past three weeks. It's led to a trio of wins and a tie for first place in the NFC East with just four weeks to go.

For Sweat, though, this is how he envisioned the unit performing all season.

"This is the kind of football we've been wanting to play since Week 1," Sweat said.
