Alex Ovechkin left Friday's preseason game against the Philadelphia Flyers in the first period after an awkward hit on Flyers forward Travis Konecny. Following the first period, the Capitals announced he would not return to the game due to a lower-body injury.
Ovechkin initiated contact from behind Konecny and it appeared his leg was caught awkwardly. After the hit, Ovechkin took one step and stumbled, falling to the ice where he remained several moments before skating off under his own power and favoring his left leg. He immediately proceeded to the tunnel.
Ovechkin has been remarkably durable during his career, but missed 11 games in 2021, the most games he has missed in a single season in his career. Ovechkin dealt with a number of ailments including leg and back injuries over the course of that season.
Friday's game is Washington's final preseason contest. The Capitals will open the regular season on Wednesday as they host the New York Rangers.
